At most grocery stores and other retailers, both paper and plastic bags are offered to customers once they have made a purchase. Both paper and plastic bags have advantages and disadvantages when they are produced, used and thrown away.
Cost to Produce
• Paper bag are rather expensive to produce, as they come from trees which have been harvested by the logging industry. The pulp used to produce the paper bags requires thousands of gallons of fresh water, and cutting, printing and shipping the paper bags consumes a number of fossil fuels. Plastic comes from oil, which must be refined. About four percent of the world's oil production is used to make plastic bags, and production requires a large amount of electricity. Plastic is cheaper to produce than paper bags and uses fewer natural resources.
Biodegradable and Recycling
• Both paper and plastic bags can be recycled, though the recycling process for paper takes more time and fossil fuels than recycling plastic bags. However, when paper bags and plastic bags become litter or are sent to landfills with household garbage, paper bags biodegrade in a relatively short amount of time compared to plastic bags, which can take hundreds of years to break down, polluting the area around them. Unrecycled paper bags are better for the environment than discarded plastic bags.
Durability
• Paper bags are stronger and thicker than plastic bags, and can hold more weight without stretching or tearing. Plastic is water-resistant whereas moisture will break down paper bags. Paper bags are easier to double bag than plastic.
